Extreme Winter Weather Precautions

With frostbite occurring in just minutes after being exposed to our expected temperatures, the Michigan State Police and the Department of Homeland Security have provided the following guidelines to help prepare for winter emergency preparedness.

Both plastic and copper pipes can burst.Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.

It's also advised that you run a slow stream of water from the faucet inside your home located the farthest from your water meter to prevent the pies from freezing. The cost associated with running the water is far less than the potential damage to your home if pipes were to burst.

Limit your time outside. If you need to go outside, wear layers of warm clothing. Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.

NEVER leave your pet chained outside or in enclosed in a way they cannot escape danger.

Wear a hat—most body heat is lost through the top of the head.
