Solid Waste, Recycling, and Compost

Green for Life (GFL)
The City of Lincoln Park has partnered with Green for Life (GFL) to bring residents solid waste, compost, and recycling program.

All items for pick up (including solid waste, recycling, and yard waste) must be out by 7:00 a.m. Bins should be 3-4 feet apart and 3-4 feet from mailboxes, trees, shrubs, vehicles, or other obstructions. Please remember that if you choose to put your trash out the night before to make sure it is packaged in a manner that will keep any animals from tearing it open. The garbage contractor is not responsible for cleaning up bags that have been torn open by animals.

Holiday Hours
GFL observes the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Please remember that if a holiday falls on a weekday, your scheduled service day will be delayed by one day. Regular collection will resume the following week.

Lost or Stolen Bin
GFL will replace lost or stolen bins. To request a replacement bin, residents will first need to make an official statement with our Police Department. An official statement that the bin has been lost or stolen is required as each bin has a serial number associated with the address/household to which it is assigned and as a result, it is the property of the City of Lincoln Park. Once the statement has been made, you may call GFL with the police report number to request your new trash can.

Damaged Bin

GFL will replace bins that are damaged through the negligence of GFL at no cost. To request a replacement bin, please contact GFL directly at (844) 464-3587. However, if a bin is damaged, other than through negligence of GFL, the resident/homeowner is responsible for the cost of the replacement bin.

Additional Bin
Residents can purchase a second GFL 65-gallon recycling bin for $75 or a second 95-gallon garbage bin for $75. To purchase additional carts please contact GFL directly at (844) 464-3587. Bins will be delivered within 5 days. GFL will bill residents directly for additional bins.

Missed Pickup
One of the most common reasons why our rubbish collection contractor miss pickups is because they simply did not see it. It is important to place your cart so that the opening faces the street with the lid completely closed to avoid rubbish from falling into the street. Be mindful to make sure the cart is not blocked by a vehicle or other curbside items.

If GFL does miss your pickup, please contact the Department of Public Services at 313-386-9000 or GFL directly at (844) 464-3587 to report that your solid waste, recycling, or compost has not been picked up. You can also submit a Report a Concern by clicking here

Special Pickup
The City of Lincoln Park Department of Public Services no longer has special pickups. You may contact GFL at 844-464-3587 to arrange for a special pickup for a fee. There is dumping available at the Department of Public Services located at 500 Southfield Road, Lincoln Park. The dumping hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The fee for dumping is $20.00 a cubic yard. The following items are not accepted: logs, concrete, hazard materials, sod, dirt, shingles, brick, tires, and paint. You must produce an ID that has a city address or a utility bill. There is no contractor dumping.

Bulky Waste-Appliances & Furniture
The collection of large, bulky waste, such as appliances and furniture, will continue to be a part of your solid waste program. Residents are allowed one bulk item per week. Please set out large, bulk items on your regular scheduled service day by 7:00 a.m. placed separately from your normal solid waste.

Large items may include washers, dryers, freezers, refrigerators, air conditioners, hot water tanks, stoves, microwaves, couches, chairs, tables, dressers, and other large items. If you are disposing of a refrigerator or freezer, please remove the doors and racks before setting the item out for collection. In addition, GFL is responsible to make sure Freon is extracted according to current environmental standards, items that still have freon in them will not be picked up. If you are disposing of a mattress, it must be wrapped.

If waste is from demolition, construction, remodeling, and/or repairs, a small amount shall be accepted by the trash hauler as a normal amount of refuse from a household. All items must be properly bundled/bagged. Large quantities shall not be regarded as household or yard refuse and shall be removed by the homeowner or contractor doing the work. The amount of household demolition picked up on any given day shall not exceed, in size, two (2) 35-gallon size containers nor weigh more than 60 pounds each.

If an amount exceeding the above standards is placed out for collection, it will not be picked up. The Ordinance Department will be contacted for these circumstances and a violation could be issued.

Solid Waste
Solid waste refers to garbage and rubbish. Garbage means the animal and vegetable wastes resulting from the handling, preparation, and cooking of food. Rubbish includes all combustible and non-combustible waste materials from households. It does not include industrial refuse or building refuse, nor does it include tree stumps, abandoned automobiles or vehicle tires.

Compost/Yard Waste
Yard waste is collected weekly the same day as your scheduled household refuse, from the first Monday in April to early December, depending on weather conditions.

Yard waste includes leaves, lawn cuttings, and shrub and tree trimmings. Yard waste can be placed into biodegradable bags or containers of 35 gallons or less that are marked "yard waste" (50-pound limit). Keep in mind, brush and limbs greater than 2 inches in diameter must be in bundles no longer than 3 feet in length, and not exceeding a total of 18 inches in diameter or more than 50 pounds. Compost stickers are available at City Hall and DPS.

The yard waste truck will not stop to look in unmarked containers. All branches and twigs need to be cut in 3-foot lengths and bundled with twine. Filled bags must be less than 50 lbs. Please remember, dirt is not considered yard waste and will not be accepted.

Yard Waste Collection began on Monday, April 1, 2024.
The tentative last day for yard waste collection is Friday, November 29, 2024.

Recycling
The weekly Recycling Program officially started on October 21, 2019. All other services you currently enjoy will remain unchanged. Your service day has not changed either. Recycling bins may not be used for anything other than recyclable materials. They may not be used as an additional trash can or compost can. The can will not be picked up if it contains compost/yard waste or trash.
