The mayor is authorized to perform wedding ceremonies in Wayne County. Public Act 211 of 1972 authorizes mayors to solemnize marriages in the State of Michigan. In 2007 a new law authorized mayors to perform marriage ceremonies anywhere in the county in which their city is located. Ceremonies must be requested and scheduled at least one week before the requested ceremony date. Ceremonies performed at city hall are held in the council chambers.

The mayor uses traditional vows for each ceremony he performs. The wording can be changed if you wish to personalize the ceremony. If you wish to change the vows, please provide a copy at least one week before the ceremony.

If the couple has their vows or ceremony preferences, they should be provided to the City Manager’s Office at least two weeks before the ceremony. The mayor will meet the wedding party at city hall to perform the ceremony. The ceremony lasts approximately ten to fifteen minutes. No rehearsal will be held.

There is a fee of $50.00 (checks should be made payable to the City of Lincoln Park). This fee must be paid before your ceremony. Payments can be made via cash or check in person or by mail. Please make your check payable to the City of Lincoln Park.

A valid Michigan Marriage License is required before the mayor can perform the service. You must apply for a license in the county where you live. The marriage license must be delivered to the City Management Office at least a week before the wedding date.

Wayne County issues Marriage Licenses which can be obtained from the Wayne County Clerk located at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, 2 Woodward Ave., Room 201, Detroit, MI 48226. Coleman A. Young Municipal Center hours are Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM with extended hours on Thursday from 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM.

Please submit the form below to request the mayor to perform a wedding ceremony. A city staff member will contact you regarding your request. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are subject to scheduling and other considerations.
